According to figures released by Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinians have perished while detained starting from October 2023. A human rights group located in Israel has indicated that the real figure is likely considerably higher, due to hundreds of unaccounted for detainees originating in Gaza.

An inmate detained alongside the individual testified that he was taken to the yard by prison staff immediately preceding his passing, visibly injured and unclothed from the hips downward. His remains remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in detention in Israel are unidentified. Detention administrators and defense forces gave investigators with the number of fatalities in detention, and basic other details including the location where they died, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Identification Challenges

In 21 cases, mostly people from Gaza, investigators were unable to match the few details supplied by officials to a casualty recorded by advocacy bodies, via testimony from freed prisoners or accounts in the press.
