French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
