Unidentified Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Coast Spurs Concerns of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Officials in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has materialized on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers worried it could be an algal bloom.
Extensive Appearance Along Beaches
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been noted on areas of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Taken for Testing
Samples have been gathered and submitted to the environmental agency for examination. A official commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to shifts in minerals, heat, precipitation or illumination".
"The events are sometimes called reddish tides because the outbreaks can color the water red," the official noted. "Only some phytoplankton events are dangerous, with numerous types functioning as a key source of nourishment for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The usual source of reddish water in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Rising Rate Linked to Global Warming
Algal blooms happen naturally but their rate has increased in recent years, in part due to global warming and environmental waste that join together to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally function as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their colonies that disturbs the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These events have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as marine life is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, providing more food for the bloom.
Previous Devastating Bloom in a neighboring state
South Australia in the past confronted a devastating algal bloom along its coastal region after a string of sea temperature spikes, which expanded across an extensive zone. The bloom caused beachgoers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
Expert Assessment on the Current Event
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the beginning of that event stated, based on photos of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"We have seen many of these events around Tassie of late," she added.
The expert said this organism did not generate toxins similar to the organism involved in that devastating event, but it does consume tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"Typically one notices a bloom of this algae after a outbreak of something else, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.
Demands for Investigation and Public Safety
A campaigner, who took samples of the pink sludge in Tasmania, commented it looked like the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, citing like situations overseas.
"So the state needs to issue a clear message here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to analyse the examples we've gathered and we need to notify the public here," she stated.
Henley stated she had anxieties for community health after feeling a prickling feeling along her limbs and skin while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
Accounts of Lifeless Sea Creatures and Calls for Leadership Response
An environmental foundation has reported lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the situation as an "natural disaster" and calling on the government head to see and "assume command the response that government must be making".
"The leader needs to know this is a disaster in the unfolding, economically as well as for nature."

Talking with journalists, the leader said he was not aware of any connections between the event and the salmon industry, emphasizing scientific testing was needed before determinations could be reached.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are safe for nature and sustainable," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the island are our treasures and we need to ensure the public and our industry can live together to utilize our seas effectively and responsibly."
